ScoresheetDAVIS, Calif. – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team inched past No. 11 UC Davis in overtime, 10-9, Friday afternoon at the Schaal Aquatics Center. The Rainbow Wahine advance to an 8-5, 1-1 Big West Conference record.
Sophomore
Claire Nixon hammered in two goals in the final stretch, both five-meters out, elevating the Rainbow Wahine to a thrilling overtime victory.
Chloe Barr led UH with a hat trick, while
Caity Lopes da Silva added two of the Rainbow Wahine's 10 goals.
Following a 0-1 deficit in the first quarter, the Rainbow Wahine exploded for five goals in the second to recover with a 5-4 lead by halftime. However, the Aggies surged back on a 2-1 run to tie it 6-6 in the third. UC Davis' Hannah Harvey (three goals) netted one in midway through the fourth quarter, but with 0:24 seconds remaining,
Gabi Mantellato Dias tied it up, taking the game into its' first overtime period, 7-7.
Harvey came through for Aggies again in the final minute of the first overtime period, rebounding one in for an 8-7 lead. However,
Paula Chillida Esforzado quickly answered back with a goal for the Rainbow Wahine, tying it 8-8 with just 0:13 seconds left. UC Davis converted a penalty shot in the sixth period to gain a 9-8 advantage, but Nixon hit one in clean from six meters out to tie it again at nine. After
Sarah Logan (nine saves) came through with her final save, UH regained possession, Nixon launching in the final goal of the match to win it all, 10-9.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their three-day road-trip tomorrow morning, as they take on Wagner at the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State.
