Women's Hoops Concludes Homestand With UCSB, Cal Poly

Game Notes

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team concludes its four-game conference home stand with UC Santa Barbara (0-20, 0-7 Big West) Thursday, Feb. 5 and league-leader Cal Poly (11-9, 6-2 Big West) on Saturday, Feb. 7. It will be the first meeting against UCSB this season, but the 'Bows are looking for redemption from its early season loss at Cal Poly.

The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a tough, two game sweep over former Big West frontrunner Long Beach State and defending champions CSUN. UH and LBSU are currently tied in conference with a 5-2 record, a half game behind Cal Poly who is at 6-2. Hawai'i is on a five-game win streak which is the longest during head coach Laura Beeman's tenure and the longest since Hawai'i won eight straight in the 2006-07 season. The 'Bows have also won their last 10 conference home games dating back to last season.

Hawai'i defeated Long Beach State, 72-64 in a physical ball game.  Shawna-Lei Kuehu came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points while Shawlina Segovia had arguably her best game at UH as she recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Destiny King added 12 points—including four free throws made in the last 40 seconds of the game to seal the win.

The Rainbow Wahine then avenged their early season loss to CSUN with a solid, wire-to-wire win over the Matadors, 64-49. Hawai'i used a 12-to-0 run that ended the first half to propel them into the second half where led by as many as 22 points. King led all scorers with 15 points—her fifth straight game in double digits—while Megan Huff recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Overall, Kuehu continues to lead Hawai'i averaging 11.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Ashleigh Karaitiana and King are tied for second on the team with 10.3 points per game. Karaitiana leads UH with 25 made 3-pointers and 27 steals. King—the only player to have started all 20 games this season—is tied for second with Huff with 6.3 rebounds. Morgan Mason leads  UH with 52 assists.

UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (0-20, 0-7 Big West)
UCSB has struggled this season but has come close to breaking through in the win column in each of its last three games, falling at Cal State Fullerton (1/24), 54-50; at UC Irvine (1/29) 61-58; and most recently against UC Davis in overtime (1/31), 60-54. Jasmine Ware leads the Gauchos on offense, averaging 8.7 points and on defense she has a team-high 36 steals. Onome Jemerigbe is right behind her at 8.6 points per game. Jemerigbe is also the team-leader with 47 assists. Makala Roper leads UCSB with 33 three-pointers made and Clair Watkins is averaging a team-high 5.4 rebounds per game.

Cal Poly Mustangs (11-9, 6-2 Big West)
The Mustangs lead the Big West with a 6-2 record, just a half game in front of UH and Long Beach State. They have won four of their last five game with their only loss coming at UC Riverside on Jan. 24. Super guard Ariana Elegado leads Cal Poly with 15.2 points per game, 90 assists and 29 steals. Elegado is also tops on her team with 47 made 3-pointers. Kristen Ale is second on the team averaging just under 10 points at 9.9 per game and has 51 assists.
