Box Score (html)MALIBU, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors (5-6) baseball squad dropped to a split series at Pepperdine (5-5) with a 16-1 loss on Friday (Feb. 27) at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The 'Bows struggled offensively against Waves starter Jackson McClelland, who continued a strong start to the 2015 campaign.
After a defensive battle in the opening frame and two outs away in the bottom of the second, a
Quintin Torres-Costa walk of nine-hole hitter Chase Lambert sparked the Waves into action. From there, 10 consecutive Pepperdine batters reached base, with the Waves putting up eight (8) runs in the frame.
Pepperdine moved to double digits with a two-run Lambert homer in the fourth.
McClelland went 5.2 innings worth of no-hitter action against the 'Bows before junior left fielder
Matt LoCoco fired a two-out double to right center. Junior shortstop
Jacob Sheldon-Collins followed with an RBI single to left field, bringing in LoCoco and putting the 'Bows on the board. It was the first run surrendered in 18.1 innings pitched by McClelland this season.
The Waves grew their lead, peppering more runs across three innings to close the game with a 16-1 victory, splitting the series at 1-1 after Hawai'i's 15-8 win in game one of the series.
McClelland (2-0) picked up the win, throwing eight (8.0) complete frames, tallying two (2) strikeouts, one (1) walk and an earned run.
For the 'Bows, Torres-Costa (0-2) takes the loss, throwing 1.2 innings before yielding to reliever
Alex Hatch. Torres-Costa struck out two (2), walked four (4) and allowed eight (8) earned runs. At the plate, Sheldon-Collins went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The four-game non-conference series with the Waves continues with game three set for Saturday (Feb. 28) at Eddy D. Field Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. PT/11:00 a.m. HT.
