Softball Splits On Final Day Of Bank Of Hawaii Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (9-7, 0-0 Big West) split their final two games in the 2015 Bank of Hawaii Invitational. The Rainbow Wahine fell to No. 19 UCF to begin the day, 6-0, but the 'Bows bounced back to pull away from UTEP,9-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawai`i was the No. 3 seed coming into today's game with a 1-2 record in pool play. UCF was No. 2 and therefore the home team with a 2-1 record.
 
The Knights posted two runs in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Kahley Ujvari and later Samantha McCloskey scored on a wild pitch. In the second inning, UCF added another run when Farrah Sullivan led the inning off with a walk and later came home on an RBI triple by Linnea Goodman.
 
UCF tacked on another run on an RBI-single by Goodman in the fourth  and then two more scored in the fifth on a two-run single by Sullivan.
 
Kanani Aina Cabrales took the loss which evened her record at 4-4. She gave up three runs on three hits with two walks in two innings.  Heather Morales threw four innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a walk and three strike outs.
 
UCF's Shelby Turnier gave up just one hit in five innings of work with two walks and nine strike outs. Jamie Ujvari closed the game, firing the last two innings. She did not allow a run and issued one walk with five strike outs.

Hawai'i scored two early runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lindsey Willmon got plunked to start the frame and stole second to move into scoring position. Keiki Carlos followed with a single to rightfield that drove in Willmon. UH then loaded the bases on a Leisha Li'ili'i walk, a hard-hit single to second by Heather Morales but Carlos was thrown out trying to score from second. Later with the bases loaded, Sarina Jaramillo laced a single up the middle to drive in pinch-runner Sarah McAndrew for the 2-0 lead after one complete inning.
 
UTEP's Danielle Pearson got the Miners on the scoreboard with an RBI double to drive in Kawehiokalani Netane.
 
But UH got the run back and extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second. Morales came through with a two-run double off the rightfield fence with the bases loaded to drive in Kayla Wartner and Keiki Carlos.
 
UTEP then posted one run in the fifth on an RBI single by Kiki Pepi that drove in Morgan Rasmason to inch closer to UH, 4-2.
 
But Hawai'i then got their offense clicking in their final two innings. In the fifth, Ulu Matagiese led off with a double to right. Jaramillo then reached on an error and both runners came home on a double drilled to the right-centerfield gap by Willmon.
 
The 'Bows followed by scoring three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Carlos led off the inning wither second hit of the game. LI'ili'i then was walked for the third time in the game. A fielder's choice from 6-to-4 off a Morales grounder left runners at the corner. Matagiese then got another hit to right to drive in Carlos. A wild pitch allowed pinch runner Kiani Wong to score and Jaramillo drove in her second run with an RBI single up the middle to score Matagiese.
 
UH's Brittany Hitchcock earned the win, raising her record to 4-3. She threw 4.2 innings allowing two runs on six hits with two strike outs. Aina Cabrales earned her first save of the year, coming in with two runners on in the fifth inning. She blanked the Miners for 2.1 innings with one strike out and facing just nine batters. Aina Cabrales also earned the win in UH's tourney opener over UTEP.
 
UTEP's Erika Harrawood took the loss, dropping her record to 0-2 on the season. She gave up four runs on five hits with three walks and a strike out. Danielle Pearson threw the final four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with a walk and two strike outs.
 
Hawai'i continues its long homestand with the four-day, Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha tournament, Feb. 26-Mar.1. California, Longwood and San Jose State will all be coming to Honolulu. Longwood will be staying for two tournaments.
