Box Score 2 Photo GalleryHONOLULU-The University of Hawaii softball team fell twice on the second day of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational. No. 19 UCF defeated the Rainbow Wahine, 4-0 then No. 16 Washington held off the 'Bows, 6-4 in the night cap on Saturday night.
UCF 4, Hawai`i 0Box Score (html)The Knights loaded the bases in the top of the first and were able to scratch out one run on a groundout to third. UCF added two more runs in the top of the third on a two-run home run by Kalyn Cenal. The Knights led 3-0 after two-and-a-half innings of action.
UCF added one more run in the top of the sixth. A sacrifice fly by Farrah Sullivan drove in Cenal from third to extend their lead to 4-0.
Kanani Aina Cabrales got the start and took the loss dropping her record to 4-3. She threw the first five innings givng up three runs-one earned-on five hits with no walks and four strike outs.
Heather Morales fired the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit with a walk and a strike out.
UCF's Shelby Turnier fired a one-hit shutout over UH. Saraina Jaramillo got UH's lone hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Turnier did not allow a walk while fanning 13 batters.
No. 16 Washington 6, Hawai'i 4Box Score (html)Hawai`i went toe-to-toe with the Huskies, but were unable to pull off the win. UH jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Lindsey Willmon and
Kayla Wartner led off with back-to-back doubles for the first run. Later, Wartner moved to third on a ground out to second and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Huskies got one run back in the top of the second on a solo home run by Kelli Suguro to rightfield.
UW then see-sawed ahead of Hawai'i in the top of the third on a two-run, Kylee Lahners home run to centerfield that give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.
Hawai'i knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third on a towering, solo home run by
Leisha Li'ili'i that sailed high over the centerfield netting in the tennis courts. It was Li'ili'i's second home run of the season and her 40th of her career.
Washington went ahead in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Taylor Van Zee which gave UW a 5-3 lead.
Hawai'i countered in the bottom of the frame to cut their deficit to 5-4. Jaramillo started the inning with a single to left.
Rachel Lack then laid down a sacrifice bunt. On the play, the pitcher's throw went past the first baseman which allowed Jaramillo to hustle to third. She then scored on a passed ball.
UW added a final run in the top of the sixth when Kelly Burdick scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Ali Aguilar, giving Washington a 6-4 lead.
UH's
Brittany Hitchcock took the loss, dropping her record to 3-3. She gave up five runs on eight hits in four innings. Aina Cabrales threw the final three innings. She did not allow a hit, but gave up one run with one strike out.
Washington's Hailey Bator earned the win in relief, improving her record to 7-0. She gave up one run on two hits with a walk and two strike outs. Kasey Stancheck gave up three runs on five hits with three strike outs in 2.2 innings pitched.
