HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior baseball team scored two runs in the eighth inning and loaded the bases in the ninth but couldn't rally for the win in a 3-2 series-opening loss to Hofstra on Wednesday night at Les  Murakami Stadium.
 
Andrew Jones (0-2) struck out a career-high six batters in his first start for the 'Bows (1-4), working five complete innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits. Alex Hatch tossed three innings of scoreless relief with Cody Culp coming on to pitch a perfect ninth.
 
Alec Eisenberg (1-0) got the win for Hofstra in five and one-third innings of work. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Kaeo Aliviado (1 H, 1 RBI) singled to put runners at the corners and Eisenberg was lifted for Bowie Matteson.
 
After manufacturing a pair of runs in the eighth inning to cut the Pride lead to just one run, UH had every opportunity to tie and even win the game in the ninth. The 'Bows, with no outs, loaded the bases on Alan Baldwin's bunt single, but Chayce Ka'aua subsequently struck out and Jonathan Weeks, pinch-hitting for Matt LoCoco, grounded into a game-ending double play.
 
Dalton Rouleau and Steven Foster both had two hits and one run to lead Hofstra (1-3) at the plate.
 
Stephen Ventimilia and Jacob Sheldon-Collins both had one hit and one run for the 'Bows.
 
UH and Hofstra continue their five-game series on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
