HAYWARD, Calif. – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team (2-0, 0-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) shut out Cal State East Bay 17-0, Friday night at the Pioneer Pool.
With most of the team getting in the water, 10 Rainbow Wahine put points on the board towards the shut-out. Sophomore attacker
Danika Kotylak led UH with four goals, with
Claire Nixon,
Erika Pauley,
Zoe Respondek and
Chloe Barr all adding two apiece.
Junior attacker
Paula Chillida Esforzado cemented the first goal of the night within the first minute of play, and from there, the Rainbow Wahine would go on to score nine unanswered to take a dominating 10-0 lead at halftime.
UH's offense quieted down in the third, with Kotylak and junior
Megan Ottoboni combining for just two goals that quarter. However, following back-to-back goals by Kotylak to open the fourth, the Rainbow Wahine never looked back, drowning out the Pioneers 17-0.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their six-game road-stand tomorrow, as they open the Stanford Invitational against long-time rival No. 2 UCLA at 10:20 a.m. PT and round off the afternoon against No. 13 Indiana at 5:00 p.m. PT. Results will be posted after each match on
Stanford Invitational Central.
