HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team rallied from being down 1-3, to knock of Pacific, 4-3 in an exciting match on Sunday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 2-1 in dual matches while the Tigers fell to 0-4.
Hawai'i won the doubles point with UH's No. 2 duo of
Felix Albert and
Chas Okamoto almost blanking Alex Giannini and Marlon Brand, 6-1 for the first win.
Kai Wehnelt and
Marcel Chan then captured the point in the No. 1 match with a 6-3 win over Sem Verbeek and Alex Hamilton, 6-3.
In singles, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 lead with straight set wins on the No. 1, 2, and 5 courts. Hawai'i, however, then began to battle back. Chan's match on the No. 6 court helped to turn the tide. He dropped the first set to Pacific's Eric Spence, 1-6 but evened things up by taking the second set, 6-4. In the third set, with the score 4-5 on serve, Chan fended off three match points on serve and volley points and went on to knot the set score at 5-5. Later, with the match tied at 6-6, Spence got off to a 3-0 lead before Chan came back to take the tiebreaker, 7-5.
Carter Lam then followed with a three set win over Jose Chamba on the No. 3 court. Lam fell in the first set, 4-6 but rebounded to take the next two 6-2, 6-4 to tie the team score at 3-3. In the final match of the day, Albert knocked off Pacific's Alex Hamilton for the win. Albert edged out Hamilton in the first set that ended in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (4). But Hamilton took the second set, 6-3 to force a deciding third set. Albert held off Hamilton to lift Hawai'i to its second straight win over Pacific, 4-3.
The Rainbow Warriors were without their No. 1 player, senior
Nils Schuhmann, who was on Maui to play in the Royal Lahaina Challenger.
Hawai'i will hit the road this week to play three matches. Two will be in the great Northwest, with the Rainbow Warriors taking on Seattle on Jan. 28 at 2:30 pm and then Washinton on Jan. 29 at 3:00 p.m. Hawai'i will then head down to San Diego to take on USD on Jan. 31 at 10:00 am.
