HONOLULU — The University of Hawaiʻi men's tennis team delivered another solid effort at the UH Tennis Complex as they continued to play well against Hawaiʻi Pacific and UC Santa Cruz on Day 2 of the Mānoa Fall Classic.
For the second consecutive day, Hawaiʻi swept its doubles matches and won all but one of its singles matches.
The Rainbow Warriors were untouchable in doubles play, winning their three matches on Saturday. UH's Simon Knezevic and Kent Mueller pulled away from UC Santa Cruz's Gavin Sonntag and Lucas Smolko for an 8-3 victory. Hawaiʻi's Adriano Dzhenev and David Knesl held off a solid push from HPU's Arthur Pery and Rene Gabriel Jung to win 8-5, while the 'Bows' Ian Layton and Hikaru Takahashi rounded out the sweep with an 8-4 victory over the Banana Slugs' Hudson Ward and Jasper Hine.
In singles, Soren Grandke set the tone early, dispatching Hawaiʻi Pacific's Ethan Terry in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. UH's Dzhenev kept things rolling with a 6-3, 6-4 win over HPU's Seth Newman. UH's Takahashi pulled out a tight first-set tiebreaker before cruising against Rene Gabriel Jung (HPU), winning 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. Knesl gave up just three games in a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over UCSC's Gavin Sonntag, while Knezevic nearly shut out UCSC's Jasper Hine 6-0, 6-1. The 'Bows' Layton closed out the Banana Slugs' Caden Wong with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 finish. Rookie Ethan Chun fought hard but fell to UC Santa Cruz's Landon Arendt 6-4, 6-2.
The Rainbow Warriors conclude their three-day Mānoa Fall Classic tournament on Sunday, Sept. 20. First serve is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
