Izzy Leung captured the season-opening Oregon State Invitational title by three strokes after a final round 73, Tuesday, at the Trysting Tree Golf Club.
Leung was the only golfer to finish the tournament under par at 1-under 215, three strokes ahead of runner-up Anica Yoo of Oregon State, who shot a final round 74. Round 2 leader Clare Sorensen of San Francisco shot a final round 78 to finish in a tie for third place.
Leung is the first UH women's golfer to win a tournament title since Dale Gammie captured the Heather Farr Memorial in 2006.
"I was kind of shocked to be honest because I didn't think I played that well today," Leung said. "I guess everyone else struggled out there with the tough pin placements. I'm happy because this is my first college win and I'm glad to get it out of the way."
With more than 10 junior titles in her native Hong Kong, Leung lists this victory among the top moments of her young career.
"This is pretty special and it ranks right up there, especially because I broke my personal best in this tournament," added Leung, who posted a 5-under 67 to take the first round lead.
As a team, the Rainbow Wahine placed seventh with a 910 total (303-299-308). Host OSU ran away with the team title at 879, 10 strokes better than USF (889). High Point finished third (893) followed by Portland State and Boise State (894), Montana (903), UH, South Dakota State (920), Northern Arizona (930), and Eastern Washington (940).
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine were
Brianna Becker (79-72-77=228/t26th),
Raquel Ek (76-74-79=229/t29th),
Nichole Cruz (82-78-81=241/52
nd), and
Kelli-Anne Katsuda (81-82-79=242/t53rd).
Leung joins a select group of UH golfers who captured individual titles. In addition to the Heather Farr Memorial, Gammie tied for first at the 2005 Bay Area Classic. Lynn McCool captured the Utah-Dixie Classic in 1991 and Bobbi Kokx won the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in 1986.
As a freshman last season, Leung posted three straight top six finishes in her first three collegiate tournaments. On Monday, the Shatin, Hong Kong native opened the OSU Invitational with a career-low 67 in the first round coupled with a second round 75 and trailed Sorensen by one stroke heading into today's final round.
The Rainbow Wahine will next compete in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Sept. 27-28 in Palm Desert, Calif.
