Box ScoreLONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 3 seed University of Hawaii women's water polo team captured third place at the Big West Tournament with a 6-4 win over No. 4 seed and host Long Beach State at the Campus Pool on Sunday afternoon. UH concluded its season with an 19-10 overall mark, winning six of its final seven matches of the year.
One day after having it quest to repeat as Big West Tournament champions halted by Cal State Northridge in the semifinals, the Rainbow Wahine bounced back with its second win this year over the 49ers. UH got off to a fast start but needed a strong second-half effort to take down Long Beach State (19-12).
The Rainbow Wahine came out strong and scored the first three goals of the match. LBSU, however, answered with three unanswered goals of their own in the second quarter as the match was tied, 3-3, at the break.
The first nine minutes of the second half proved decisive as UH got consecutive goals by
Emily Carr,
Zoe Respondek and
Chloe Barr to take a 6-3 lead early in the fourth quarter. It would be plenty enough for the 'Bows as they held the 49ers to just one goal in the second half to assure the win. UH got a balanced attack with six different players finding the back of the net.
The match marked the final appearances for seniors
Danielle Lewis and
Amy Carlson. Lewis scored UH's first goal of the match, while Carlson was part of UH's big defensive effort with three saves in the cage for the 'Bows .
