Hawai‘i Splits Games in Jack in the Box Spring Fling Tournament

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i softball team (11-9, 0-0 Big West) split their two games on the fourth day of the Jack in the Box Spring Fling Tournament. Hawai`i knocked of California 6-2 but fell in the final game of the night to Pacific, 4-2 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Rainbow Wahine and the Golden Bears both endured a long rain delay to play their second game against each other. UH came back from a 0-2 deficit to score six runs in the bottom of the third for the win. UH pitcher Loie Kesterson earned the win, raising her record to 5-2 on the year. She threw the complete game, giving up two runs on four scattered hits with four walks and four strike outs.
 
The Rainbow Wahine loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning on three consecutive singles by Jazmine Zamora, Keiki Carlos, and Leisha Li`ili`i. But Cal starter Nisa Ontiveros then settled down with a pair of strike outs to thwart the Rainbow rally.

Cal got on the board first in the top of the second inning. Jordan Wallace led off the second inning with a solo home run over the centerfield fence. Two batters later, Mary Lee hit a double down the rightfield line. Lee advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI-single by Kylie Reed that gave the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead.
 
Hawai`i leap-frogged Cal in the bottom of the third inning, posting six runs on the scoreboard. UH loaded the bases again with one out, but this time was able to capitalize. After a ground out started the inning, Carlos smacked a single through the left-side of the infield and was followed by Li`ili`i who drilled a double to the centerfield fence. Kristina Akiona was then beaned to load the bases. Then, Sharla Kliebenstein was plunked to force Carlos across the plate. Kaile Nakao then lifted a sacrifice fly to drive in pinch runner Kiani Wong and move both Akiona and Kliebenstein into scoring position. Ulu Matagiese then came through with a single hit to leftfield to plate Akiona. Saraina Jaramillo then launched a three-run home run over the leftfield fence. It was Jaramillo's first career home run gave UH a 6-2 lead after three complete innings.
 
Kesterson and the UH defense then held off Cal the rest of the way. Kesterson did not allow a hit from the third inning on, but four runners did reach base safely on three walks and a fielder's choice.
 
Cal's Nisa Onitiveros suffered the loss, dropping her record to 6-4. She threw the first two-and-two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on seven hits with two strike outs. Stephanie Trzcinski threw the final three-and-a-third, giving up one run on one hit with a walk and a pair of strike outs.

Hawai`i fell in the night-cap to Pacific, 4-2. Carlos took the loss, dropping her record to 0-2 on the season. She gave up four runs on 11 hits with two walks. She fired her second complete game of the season and fourth in her pitching career.
 
Pacific jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. The Tigers got back-to-back hits by Megan Foglesong and Cassiday Gustafson with one out and Alex Steinmehl drove in Foglesong with a groundout to second.
 
In the bottom of the second, Matagiese ripped a single down the third baseline. Kayla Wartner followed with a hard-hit single to right. On the play Matagiese hustled into third, but the rightfielder bobbled the ball and Matagiese took off for home, but she was cut down at the plate with a good relay, 9-to-4-to-2.
 
Hawai`i then took the lead in the bottom of the third on a two out rally. Lindsey Willmon started things with a single right up the middle. Jazmine Zamora then hit a grounder that snuck between shortstop and third for a hit. Carlos then drove in Willmon from second with a single up the middle and Li`ili`i followed with a drive deep to right-centerfield to score Zamora from second.
 
Pacific then posted single runs in each of the next three innings. Foglesong started thi fourth off with a single to left-centerfield and moved to third on a double by Gustafson. After a flyout to left, Taylor Brink hit a ball in the hole at short, but Jaramillo caught the grounder and dove to tag out Gustafson running from second to third. On the play however, Foglesong scored to tie the game at 2-2.
 
In the fifth, Pacific got a lead-off home run from Nicole Zapotoczny and in the sixth, an RBI-single by Melanie Habib drove in Gustafson for the Tigers' fourth and final run of the game.
Pacific's Dani Bonnet earned the win, improving to 3-4 on the season. She allowed two runs on 10 hits with two walks and five strike outs.
 
Hawai`i has one final game of the tournament on Sunday at 12:30 pm against James Madison. Before that game, California will take on James Madison at 9:30 am.
