HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team saw its seven-match home win streak come to an end in a four-set loss to No. 8 UC Irvine Friday night in the first of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-14.
The Rainbow Warriors (11-7, 9-6 MPSF) lost for just the third time at home this season. UCI (12-8, 9-7) hit .097 in a first set loss but rebounded by hitting .357, .632, and .429 the rest of the way.
Leading the way for UH was opposite
Brook Sedore, the reining AVCA and MPSF Player of the Week, who tallied a match-high 13 kills but hit only .229. Outside hitter
Jace Olsen added 11 kills while middle blocker
Taylor Averill had eight kills and four blocks against his former teammates. Averill and middle blocker
Nick West are both UCI transfers.
Scott Kevorken led the Anteaters with 12 kills, hitting .588 while Connor Hughes and Jeremy Dejno each chipped in with 11 kills. As a team, the Anteaters hit .345 and recorded six service aces, four of which occurred in the fourth set.
The 'Bows had seven of their 8.5 team blocks in a 25-22 first set victory, including three each by Averill and West. Averill had his three blocks on the first three points as UH led 3-0 and never trailed the rest of the way.
Hawai'i got off to a blistering start in Set 2, scoring eight of the first nine points. The Anteaters slowly trimmed away and pulled away at the end, scoring the final six points of the set, including three kills by Kevorken, to take it 25-21.
The Warriors found themselves in a funk again during the middle of Set 3 when the Anteaters reeled off seven straight for a 19-12 lead. UCI torched Hawai'i in Set 4 with an 8-2 run to break open an insurmountable 16-9 lead.
The teams play again on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
