Box ScoreHONOLULU – The No. 10 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team fell victim to a strong second half by No. 6 UC Irvine in dropping a 9-5 decision Friday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. UH dropped to 13-7 overall and 1-1 in the Big West.
In a showdown of last year's Big West regular-season co-champions, the Anteaters came alive in the second half. After trailing 2-1 at the half, UCI out-scored UH 8-3 after the break, including 4-1 in the pivotal third quarter.
Danielle Warde and Jessy Cardey each scored three goals to pace the Anteaters (17-6, 1-0 BWC) who won their seventh straight match.
Emily Carr led UH with three goals.
It was defensive battle in the first half as the Rainbow Wahine held the Anteaters to just one goal through the first 16 minutes. UH, however, left numerous goals off the board in the first half as a strong performance by Jillian Yocum kept UCI in the match. The junior goalkeeper tallied 11 saves, highlighted by a stop on a UH penalty shot in the second quarter.
The loss was UH's second this year to the Anteaters after falling to them 9-4 in the Stanford Invitational last month.
The Rainbow Wahine wrap up their five-match homestand when they host No. 2 UCLA on Saturday, March 29. Start time is 6:00 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
