HONOLULU – The No. 11 University of Hawai'i women's water polo split a pair of non-conference matches with a 9-5 win over No. 14 Indiana and a 14-6 loss to top-ranked USC Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Rainbow Wahine moved to 13-6 on the season.
In the first match of the day, UH gave one of its best defensive performances of the year to topple Indiana (10-4). The scored was tied 2-2 after the first quarter, but the pivotal second quarter saw UH shutout the Hoosiers while scoring twice to take a 4-2 lead at the break. UH never relinquished that lead and exploded for four goals in the final quarter to ensure the victory.
Freshman
Claire Nixon recorded her second consecutive hat trick with three goals. Senior goalkeeper
Amy Carlson recorded a career-high 14 saves and limited the Hoosiers to just three goals through the first three quarters.
In the night cap, USC simply overwhelmed the Rainbow Wahine early to cruise to victory. In a rematch of last year's NCAA semifinals, the Trojans scored the first 10 goals of the match and never looked back, improving to a perfect 18-0 on the season.
UH scored five of its six goals after halftime, including a trio of goals by
Paula Chillida Esforzado. Monica Vavic had a match-high four goals to pace the Trojans.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their five-match homestand when they host UC Irvine (March 28) and UCLA (March 29) next weekend. Both matches begin at 6 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
