MALIBU , Calif. – In the first of three road matches, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior tennis team fell 4-3 at No. 42 Pepperdine on Monday at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
 
Chas Okamoto won at both third doubles and singles, topping the Pepperdine pair of Alex Giannini and Rakshay Thakkar then beating Stefan Menichella in straight sets. Okamoto's singles win gave the 'Bows their first point of the match.
 
Pavel Liska then tied the match with a straight-set win over Thakkar at the six, 6-2, 6-4, but Francis Alcantara responded with a 6-4, 6-1 over UH's No.1 Jonathan Brooklyn.
 
The Waves got the deciding point in five singles when Kento Tanaka-Tamaki outlasted Carter Lam in three sets. Lam rallied with a 6-2 win in set two but Tanaka-Tamaki responded to complete the 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 match-clinching win.
 
The four singles match, after Pepperdine had clinched the win, proved to be the most competitive. David Schuster won a third-set tiebreaker to beat Pepperdine's Pedro Leme 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3).
 
The 'Bows will remain in Southern California where they will next face USC on Friday, then close the trip the following day at Loyola Marymount.
