IRVINE, Calif. – For the second straight day the No. 6 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team split a pair of matches in the UC Irvine Invitational, falling to No. 11 San Jose State, 10-9, before concluding the tournament with a 10-7 victory over No. 16 UC Santa Barbara.
The Rainbow Wahine, who stand at 7-4 overall, finished in 11th place in the 16-team tournament with a 2-2 mark.
In the morning match, UH got off to a slow start against the Spartans, trailing 5-2 at half. The Rainbow Wahine rallied in the second half but would fall one goal short. Senior
Danielle Lewis continued to contribute as she scored two goals, while sophomore
Paula Chillida Esforzado scored two as well.
The Rainbow Wahine completed the UCI Invitational with a rebound-win over UCSB in the final session as UH out-scored the Gauchos 7-3 in the second frame. UH junior
Emily Carr scored three goals, while three others scored two.
UH will be back on the road in two weeks for the Claremont Convergence Tournament in Claremont, California, March 7-8.
