LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to No. 8 USC, Thursday, in the first of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at the Galen Center. Set scores were 25-17, 15-25, 25-14, 25-22.
The loss snapped the Rainbow Warriors' (9-5, 7-4) four-match winning streak. The teams will play again on Saturday.
Opposite
Brook Sedore led Hawai'i with 14 kills but hit only .205. Outside hitter
Sinisa Zarkovic added 13 kills and a career-high 11 digs for his first double-double of the season. Middle blocker
Taylor Averill had seven kills hitting .462 with two aces while freshman
Kupono Fey came off the bench and finished with seven kills in two sets.
Tanner Jansen had a match-high 20 kills on .395 hitting for the Trojans (8-5, 7-5), who hit .328 as a team. Lucas Yoder added 18 kills, hitting at a .371 clip.
The first three sets was a match of runs as the winning team won in convincing fashion. The Trojans won Sets 1 and 3, 25-17 and 25-14, respectively, while the Warriors took Set 2, 25-15. In each of those sets, the outcome was decided early on, however Set 4 was a battle.
The Trojans held a slight lead throughout but UH closed to within one on numerous occasions. Zarkovic was roofed giving the Trojans a 23-21 lead and Jansen followed with a kill setting up match point. After a Zarkovic kill, Jansen ended it with his 20
th kill.
First serve for Saturday's rematch is 7:05 p.m. PT (5:05 p.m. HT) and the match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks as well as broadcast on NBC Sports Radio AM 1500.
