SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team received a rude welcome on the road with a 77-65 loss to Cal Poly in its Big West opener Thursday night at the Mott Athletics Center. The loss snapped UH's (11-4, 0-1 BWC) four-game win streak and was just the second setback for the team in the last 11 contests.

Cal Poly (5-9, 1-0 BWC) got a stranglehold of UH from the get-go and never relented in snapping a four-game losing streak and winning its 15th straight Big West home game. The Mustangs continued their mastery over the Rainbow Warriors with their fifth straight win in the series.

Chris Eversley and David Nwaba led the way for the Mustangs with 17 points each. Three Rainbow Warriors scored in double-digits, led by Garrett Nevels 16 points. Christian Standhardinger poured in 15, while Isaac Fotu added 13.

The 'Bows got off to bad start falling into a double-digit hole less than four minutes into the game. Fueled by some hot three-point shooting, the Mustangs built its lead to as many as 18 points late in the first half—UH's biggest deficit of the year. Hawai'i however gained momentum with a 12-3 run to cut the deficit in half, 41-32, at the break.

UH  though couldn't keep that momentum coming out of the locker room as the Mustang started the second half just as they did in the first—with a 10-2 run that extended the lead to a comfortable 17 points. Cal Poly controlled the second half as the Bow would get no closer than the final margin..

Cal Poly was honed in on the bucket all night, shooting 50 percent for the game, including a sizzling 8-of-19 from three-point range. The Mustangs also converted 13-of-16 (.810) from the free throw line. UH shot 46 percent from the floor but for the second straight game struggled from long-range, converting just 4-of-19 (.211) from behind the arc.

The Rainbow Warriors next travel down the coast to face Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Jan. 11. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT).
