SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The sixth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team opened its 2014 season with a 13-8 win over Santa Clara Thursday afternoon at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
The Rainbow Wahine scored the first eight goals of the match and never looked back in spoiling the Broncos (0-1) home opener. Sophomore
Paula Chillida Esforzado exploded for a career-high six goals in the win. Five other players got in the scoring column, including
Caity Lopes da Silva who also finished with a hat trick with three goals.
With All-Americans
Monika Eggens and
Amarens Genee departed due to graduation, Chillida Esforzafo and Lopes da Silva quickly filled the offensive void, combining for nine of the team's 13 goals. Senior goalkeeper

The contest marked the first of a six-match, four-day season-opening stretch for the Rainbow Wahine. The Rainbow Wahine put together an impressive performance, taking a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and a 9-2 lead heading into halftime, before cruising in the final two quarters. UH improved to a perfect 9-0 all-time against Santa Clara with the win.
UH next heads to Hayward to face Cal State East Bay on Friday, Jan. 31 at 4:00 p.m. PT.
