HONOLULU – The 10
th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team needed only 93 minutes to sweep UC San Diego, Sunday, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-14, 25-16, 25-22.
The Rainbow Warriors (5-2, 3-1 MPSF) did not drop a set to the Tritons in the two-match series, also winning easily on Friday night. UH also extended its dominant lead in the series with UCSD to 47-4 all-time.
Hawai'i committed only eight errors in the match and hit for a season-best .478. Outside hitter
Sinisa Zarkovic led the way with 11 kills on .368 hitting. UH's middle attack was nearly unstoppable as
Taylor Averill (10) and
Davis Holt (7) combined for 17 kills with no errors on .810 hitting. Holt also added a career-best eight blocks, including three solo blocks.
UCSD (0-7, 0-6) was led the Nick Iorfino's 12 kills.
As they did two nights earlier, the Warriors jumped all over the Tritons from the start of the match leading 10-3 to open Set 1. Consecutive aces by
Hendrik Mol gave UH its largest lead at 21-9 and the Warriors went on to hit .524 in the 25-14 rout.
Hawai'i caused fits for the Tritons again in Set 2, jumping out to an 8-2 lead. UH extended its lead to double-digits at 13-3 after Zarkovic pounded an overpass and the Warriors subbed frequently in the 25-16 win.
With three new starters in the lineup, the Tritons were more competitive in Set 3, taking a 10-8 lead. Later in the set,
Joby Ramos' dump tied the score at 16 and he teamed with Holt to block Scot Metzger for a one-point lead. One point later, Ramos' ace gave UH a two-point cushion. Timmer's ace put UH on top 22-19 and the Warriors sided-out for the straight-set victory.
The Rainbow Warriors will next hit the road for a pair of MPSF matches against UC Santa Barbara, Jan. 30-31.
