HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-3, 0-0 Big West) has two scheduled matches this week. The Rainbow Wahine will host their Big West Conference opener against No. 42 and defending BWC champions, Long Beach State on Monday, Jan. 20 at the UH Tennis Complex; and Washington State on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Wailea Tennis Complex on Maui.
The 'Bows head into their Big West opener against the 49ers looking for a win after going 1-2 this past week.
Cindy Nguyen led UH, winning all three of her No. 1 singles matches last week against Nevada, San Jose State and Washington. Nguyen had a busy week, first in UH's win over Nevada, she battled back against Michelle Okhremchuk after falling in the first set, 1-6, she edged out her Wolf Pack opponent, 7-6 (7-4 tie-break) in the second set. Nguyen then hung on to win in the super tie-breaker, 10-8 for one of the most dramatic wins early in the season. Then Nguyen defeated Marie Klocker (SJSU) in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 and against the Huskies this past Saturday, she captured UH's only win of the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Elianne Miron.
Long Beach State comes into conference play ranked 42nd in the nation with double partners Karolina Rozenberg and Ebba Unden ranked 58th. Unden and Rozenberg posted a 22-5 record last season, and led Long Beach State to its ninth Big West Tournament Championship in the last 10 years.
Washington State is off to a good start, winning their first two matches of the spring season in dominant fashion. WSU blanked Montana State, 7-0 and then went on to shut out Idaho as well, 5-0 this past Friday. The Cougars had a solid fall season, as they posted a 38-7 singles record. Junior Elizaveta Luzina led Washington State last season with an 18-17 record in doubles, and 23-14 in singles.
