Old Timers Prevail In Annual Alumni Match

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team held its annual alumni match Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. The event attracted former Warriors from every decade dating back to the 1950s.

In the featured match, the alumni defeated the current group of Warriors, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23.

The alumni squad featured more than 30 former players, including All-Americans Delano Thomas, Kimo Tuyay, Brian Beckwith, Vernon Podlewski, Mauli'a LaBarre, to more recent alums Nemo Komar, Rory Brandt, Sean Carney, Jarrod Lofy, and Nick Castello among others.

With its postseason hopes still alive, UH rested several starters for the exhibition while several seldom-used players saw action.

For the alumni, Thomas and Carney each chipped in six kills to lead the way. Thomas, who flew in from his home in Sacramento, Calif., also added three aces and one block. Carney, a former Warrior and current UH assistant coach, notched his sixth kill on match point. Brandt, LaBarre, and Komar had five kills.

For the Warriors, sophomore opposite Brook Sedore posted a match-high 13 kills while junior outside hitter Jace Olsen added five kills. Sedore led a UH rally in the final set, nearly erasing a six-point deficit to pull the Warriors to within 22-21.

In the earlier all-alumni match, the Green team defeated the Black, 28-26, 18-25, 17-15. Leading the Green was Carney, who had eight kills and two blocks, while Lofy added four blocks. LaBarre had a match-high 11 kills for the Black while Komar added six kills and two aces.

The Warriors return to action later this week with a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation road matches at UC San Diego, April 12-13. In order for UH to qualify for the MPSF Tournament, the Warriors will need to win both matches while Cal State Northridge will need to lose matches at UC Irvine on Wednesday and Long Beach State on Saturday.
