Women's Basketball Signs Harris for 2013-14 Season

HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i women's basketball head coach Laura Beeman announced the signing of Briana Harris from St. Monica Catholic High School in Santa Monica, Calif. She becomes the fourth player to sign a National Letter of Intent to play for the Rainbow Wahine in 2013-14.

Harris, a 5-7” point guard, started her high school career by helping Santa Monica High School win a state championship as a freshman in 2010. A year later she transferred to St. Monica High School where in just two seasons, she broke the school's all-time scoring record amassing 1,424 points. As a junior, she averaged 23.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as well as three assists and two steals per game. As a senior, Harris helped the Mariners advance to the state regional semi-final and capture their first ever state championship. She was voted the team's Most Valuable Player, earned all-league MVP honors and was named CIF Division 4A Player of the Year in her senior season. In her final year with the Mariners, she averaged 24 points, nine rebounds, 4.5 assists and two steals a game. Harris posted a career-high 40 points against John Burroughs High School (Burbank, Calif.) and recorded her first triple-double against St. Joseph's High School (Lakewood, Calif.).

“Briana will be a wonderful addition to our program.” says Beeman. “The need to add an additional point guard was our first priority in this recruiting class. Briana's size, strength, ability to handle the ball and push tempo will compliment our team well next year. She has a great “basketball I.Q.” and is a soft spoken yet fierce competitor. We are very exited that Briana has decided to join our 'ohana.”

Harris joins a trio of standouts from Mount San Antonio College (Walnut, Calif.) who signed earlier this year. Ashley Burchfield, Morgan Mason, and Shawlina Segovia helped lead the Mounties to an undefeated season en route to winning back-to-back state and conference championships. Burchfield and Segovia both were named to the state all-tournament team. Mason led the Mounties' offense averaging 12.0 points per game with a 46.9 field-goal percentage while grabbing 5.4 rebounds per game. Segovia led Mount SAC with 7.9 boards a game to go with 10.3 points and Birchfield scored 9.3 points and secured 7.3 rebounds a game.
