HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i sand volleyball team completed the second day of the USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge with five UH tandems competing in three separate divisions. Each of the five squads went 1-1 on the day.
UH's top pair of
Natasha Bell and
Tai Manu-Olevao competed in the 16-team gold division, advancing to the quarterfinals with a three-set victory over Katy Fuller and Cinnamon Sary of USC, before falling to UCLA's Kelly Reeves and Meg Norton. No. 2
Ginger Long and
Katie Spieler were swept by top-seeded Lila Frederick and Kim Hill of Pepperdine, but bounced back with a consolation win over Becca Strehlow and Zoe Nitingale of UCLA.
In the silver division, No. 3
Emily Mount and
Ashley Kastl rolled over Danica Youngblood and Sarah Little of Cal State Bakersfield in the round of 16 before a tough three-set loss to UCLA's Karsta Lowe and Bojana Todorovich. No. 4
Ali Longo and
Olivia Urban lost to Lowe and Todorovich in the opening round and defeated Youngblood and Little in a consolation match.
UH's No. 5 tandem of
Ku`ulei Zalopany and
Nikki Miyashita competed in the eight-team bronze division. The pair picked up a quarterfinal win over Phelix Fincher and Maddy Klineman of UCLA, before succumbing to Pepperdine's Emily Cook and Katie Messing.
