STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team set numerous personal bests on the first day of the Stanford Invitational, Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Among the highlights included senior
Samantha Balentine, who placed third in the invitational high jump, clearing 5-10.5 (1.79m), her second-best jump of her life. Sophomore
Alex Porlier Langlois won the collegiate shot put with a personal-best of 48-3.25 (14.71m), more than two and a half feet further than her previous best throw.
All seven of UH's 100-meter hurdlers ran seasonal-bests and three of them ran personal bests –
Zhane Santiago (14.18s),
Amanda Alvarez (14.38s) and
Samantha Esperanza (14.46s). Of those three, Santiago and Alvarez qualified for Saturday's finals.
In addition, Alvarez and Santiago qualified for the final of the long jump. Alvarez placed fifth with a PR jump of 18-9.75 (5.73m) while Santiago improved her PR by three inches for a seventh place jump of 18-5.25 (5.62m).
Junior
Kaleigh Morrison threw a PR of more than six and a half feet in the collegiate javelin and placed sixth with a throw of 124-8 (37.99m). In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman
Morgan Struble ran a PR of 1:02.91 to win her heat and placed 13th overall. Freshman
Kayla Kirk jumped a PR of 17-8 (5.38m) in the collegiate long jump.
The meet continues on Saturday with the team's triple jumpers, pole vaulters, discus and hammer throwers in action.
