HONOLULU –
Corey MacDonald pitched his second complete game and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team rallied for a 6-2 win over UC Santa Barbara on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The 'Bows (6-17, 1-1) notched their first Big West Conference win while the Gauchos dropped to 13-11 overall and 1-1 in conference.
MacDonald (3-2) went the distance for the second time this season, giving up two runs on four hits and posting six strikeouts. After struggling early with control issues and giving up two second inning runs, he settled down and pitched scoreless ball the rest of the way.
Conner George had three hits and one run to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Pi'ikea Kitamura (1-4, 2 RBI) recorded his 100
th career RBI with a two-run double in the seventh inning and
Austin Wobrock added two hits and two runs.
Dalton Kelly batted 2-3 with an RBI to lead the Gauchos with Cameron Newell adding one hit and one run.
Justin Jacome (2-2, 3 R, 6 K) was tagged with the loss in six and one-third innings of work. Jacome had been cruising through the Rainbow order before UH tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning.
Kaeo Aliviado (1 H, 2 RBI) ripped Jacome's pitch to right field to score Wobrock and
Stephen Ventimilia (1 H, 2 R, 1 RBI).
Jerry Kleman (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) gave UH its first lead when he ripped an RBI single through the left side of the infield to highlight a four-run seventh inning. Kitamura capped the big inning with his two-RBI double and MacDonald shut down the Gaucho order the rest of the way.
The 'Bows and UCSB will play the final conference game of the series on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Sunday's series finale will be played as a non-conference game.
