SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State. After falling short to Indiana, 8-6 in the morning, the Rainbow Wahine demolished Bucknell 10-4 in the evening at the Aztec Aquaplex.
UH had a slow start to begin with as the Hoosier's held a strong 7-4 lead going into the second half. The Rainbow Wahine tried many attempts at recovering a lead and
Zoe Respondek scored one for UH in the third, but was matched by Indiana soon after.
In the final quarter senior
Amarens Genee was able to put in one goal for the Rainbow Wahine but it was not enough to steal the win from the Hoosiers. Genee led the Rainbow Wahine with two goals.
The Rainbow Wahine bounced right back in the evening outscoring Bucknell 5-1 in the first quarter and scoring four more in the second for a 9-3 halftime lead.
The pace slowed down in the second half, but the Rainbow Wahine sat comfortably as they increased the lead by one in the third. Bucknell was able to find the net one more time in the fourth but it was no match for UH's quick start.
Senior
Monika Eggens led UH with six goals, while
Emily Carr added two for the Rainbow Wahine.
Action continues Sunday morning as the Rainbow Wahine conclude the Aztec Invitational against Princeton at 10:30 a.m. PT at the Aztec Aquaplex.
