No. 5/4 Californa Holds Off No. 20/23 Hawai`i, 1-0

HONOLULU—The No. 20/23 University of Hawai`i softball team (19-6, 0-0 Big West) fell to No. 5/4 California, 1-0 on the second day of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Senior pitcher Kaia Parnaby suffered the loss, dropping her record to 17-3 in a complete game effort. The loss snapped UH's eight game win streak that began on March 3rd.
 
Parnaby scattered nine hits and allowed just one run in the second inning. She did not allow a walk and struck out five batters.  The loss snapped Parnaby's 14-game win streak.
 
The Golden Bears scored the only run of the game in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Danielle Henderson led off with a single up the middle and Jolene Henderson followed with a bunt single single that was pushed between the first baseman and second baseman, allowing Danielle Henderson to scoot all the way to third. Cal attempted a delayed double steal, but UH was able to thwart the attempt, with Iwata tossing to Leisha Li`ili`i at first to tag out Jolene Henderson diving back to first. Breana Kostreba was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and third again. Vanessa Alvarez then hit a looper to left that glanced off a diving Sharla Kliebenstein's glove which allowed Danielle Henderson to score.
 
Jolene Henderson picked up the win to raise her record to 18-2 on the year with a complete game effort. She gave up just two hits with a walk and nine strike outs.
 
Hawai`i continues play in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament on Friday with a doubleheader beginning with Syracuse at 6:00 pm and then No. 19/14 Baylor at 8:00 pm.
