Day 1 Results
KANE'OHE, O'ahu- The University of Hawai'i women's golf team finished the first day at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational Tuesday at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course with its best 36-hole score of the season and senior Ka'ili Britos in contention for the individual title, four strokes off the lead heading into Wednesday's final round.
The Rainbow Wahine currently sit in seventh place in the 16-team field. UH shot a first round 309 and a season-best round of 302 in its second 18 for a 611 total.
Leading the charge for the Rainbow Wahine is Britos (74-71) who is currently tied for fifth at 1-over 145. The Honolulu native shot a first round 74 and a solid 1-under 71 in round two. Britos' day was highlighted by seven birdies, three bogeys, one double bogey and a triple bogey. At one point during her second round, she was in second place, just two shots off the lead before finishing her day with a bogey on the 18
th hole.
Britos will try to become the first UH women's golfer to win a tournament since Dale Gammie won the Heather Farr Memorial in the 2006-07 season.
Also competing for UH is freshman
Nichole Cruz, who is currently tied for 25
th after shooting a first round 79 and a second round 74 to give her a total of 153. Cruz struggled in her early round but rebounded in the second round with a 2-over.
Junior
Liana Otake shot 79 and 76 for a total of 155 and sits in a tie for 33
rd. Otake started off slow but found her groove in the afternoon finishing round two at 4-over. Senior
Megan Inouye sits in a tie for 51
st after shooting a first round 78 and second round 81 to give her a two round total of 159. Junior Charlee Kapiioho shot a first round 78 and a second round 82 to give her a two round total of 160 and a tie for 56
th place with one round to play.
The seventh-ranked Arizona Wildcats (289-293) have a sizeable lead in the team standings with a total of 582 on day one. Ohio State (296-300) currently sits in second place 14 strokes shy of the lead with a two round total of 596. Louisville (296-302) and Gonzaga (300-300) are in third and fourth place, respectively.
Individually, Arizona's Manon Gidali holds the individual lead with two rounds under par (71 and 70) for a 141 total. Amy Meier (71-72) of Ohio State and Abby Newton (74-69) of Mississippi are hot on her heels only two strokes back at 143, respectively. Newton shot the low round of the day with a 69 in the afternoon.
The third and final round of play will take place Wednesday at Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.
