HONOLULU –
Scott Squier tossed a gem but it wasn't enough as the University of Hawai'i baseball team lost 3-1 in 12 innings to Gonzaga on Monday night at Les Murakami Stadium. Cabe Reiten's two-RBI triple in the 12
th inning proved to be the game winner for the Bulldogs (9-4-1).
The Rainbows (1-15) lost for the second time this season after standing one strike away from the win. Squier took a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning but after Corey Lebrun's base hit to right field, Gonzaga had tied the game. Squier finished the ninth inning but his evening went down as a no decision. He allowed just the one ninth-inning run on four hits while striking out six Bulldog hitters.
Marc Flores's solo homerun in the second inning, the team's first round tripper of the season, was the highlight of the night for the 'Bows. Flores (2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI) also gave UH life in the bottom of the 12
th inning when he doubled to the right centerfield gap.
Alex Bonczyk batted 2-3 with one run to lead the Bulldogs. Gonzaga lefty Derek Callahan rivaled Squier's performance. He allowed one run on five hits in eight and one-third innings of work.
Jon Flinn (0-2) was tagged with the loss for UH. He allowed two runs on four hits in three innings of work. Michael Rucker (1-0) tossed three and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for Gonzaga.
After Flores gave the 'Bows the early lead, they were poised to add more runs when he came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning with
Kaeo Aliviado and
Trevor Podratz on base. He was able to advance the runners on a chopper to third base, but
Andre Real struck out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, UH again had a pair of runners in scoring position. After
Austin Wobrock reached base on an infield hit, Pi'ikea Kitamura hit a blooper to shallow right field that was mishandled by Reiten. Aliviado came to the plate but again the threat dissipated when he popped out to left field.
Hawai'i and Gonzaga conclude their series on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
