HONOLULU – In the opener of the UNLV Rebel Classic on Thursday afternoon, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team lost to Loyola Marymount, 9-0. The 'Bows, held scoreless for the second straight game, fell to 0-9 while the Lions improved to 4-5.
Scott Squier (0-2) suffered the loss for Hawai'i, allowing three earned runs on six hits in five and two-thirds innings of work. Colin Welmon (2-1) delivered a two-hit shutout to earn the win for LMU.
Kaeo Aliviado (2-4) recorded UH's only two hits on the afternoon.
Matt Lowenstein batted 3-5 with two runs and one RBI to lead LMU.
The Lions took an early lead when they plated three runs in their first at bats of the game. Joey Boney (1 H, 1 R) led off the game with a base hit. Cullen Mahoney (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) drove home Boney on a triple for LMU's first run, then scored on a base hit by Lowenstein.
After allowing the three first-inning runs, Squier settled down and pitched scoreless ball until the sixth inning when LMU put another two runs on the board. With two outs and no one on base, the Lions were able to manufacture a pair of runs and take a 5-0 lead. After a hit batsman and an Andre Real fielding error at second base, Zac Fujimoto (2-3, 3 RBI) drove home both baserunners on a double to left field.
LMU put on the finishing touches with four runs in the seventh inning. RBI-singles by Tanner Donnels (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Fujimoto led to the big inning as the Lions cruised to the win.
The 'Bows will look to notch their first win when they face Bradley on Friday at 2:05 PT (12:05 HT).
