Men’s Volleyball Goes The Distance With No. 1 UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – The 11th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team tied a school record by playing its ninth five-set match of the season in falling to No. 1 UC Irvine, Monday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Bren Center. Set scores were 21-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 15-11.
 
The Warriors (5-9, 4-7 MPSF) went the distance for the second time in three matches on their current road trip. UH is 4-5 in five-setters this season and ties the 2004 squad which played nine five set matches that season.
 
The teams play again on Tuesday beginning at 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT) at the Bren Center.
 
Sophomore Brook Sedore led the Warriors with a career-high 20 kills. Freshman Sinisa Zarkovic added 15 kills and 10 digs while JP Marks tallied 13 kills and 12 digs. The Warriors hit .222 for the match and were out-blocked 16-8.
 
Kevin Tillie had a match-high 22 kills to lead the Anteaters (13-3, 10-3) to their ninth consecutive victory. UCI also extended its win streak over Hawai'i to six matches dating back to 2011.
 
The Warriors capitalized on three straight Anteater hitting errors for a 14-10 lead midway through Set 1. UCI inched its way back to within one at 18-17 after back-to-back kills by La Cavera and Dejno. UH answered with a kill by Sedore and added another when Tillie stepped over the 10 foot line. The Warriors pushed their lead to 22-18 after a kill by Marks and went on to the 25-21 victory.
 
In the second set, the Anteaters grabbed early advantage scoring three straight for a 10-6 lead. UCI extended the lead to seven at 16-9 with another three-point surge and never look back to tie the match at one set a piece.
 
UH answered back in Set 3. After 12 ties and lead changes, the Warriors scored back-to-back points off a kill and block by Zarkovic for a 20-17 lead. Moments later, the Warriors strung together consecutive points again with kills by Averill and Sedore for a 23-19 lead. The teams traded side-outs until
 
The see-saw match continued in Set 4 as the Anteaters jumped on top early, scoring five straight for a 10-4 lead. The Warriors would not threaten the rest of the set.
 
UC Irvine scored the first five points of Set 5. Sedore hit long and was blocked on consecutive plays during a three-point span. The Anteaters pushed their lead to 10-3 after stuffing the Warriors on three straight plays. Hawai'i rallied with three consecutive points of their own to close to 10-6 but the Anteaters closed out the match at 15-11.
