HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i used a key second-half surge to get past Western Michigan, 78-68, on the second evening of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
It was a close game throughout, but the Rainbow Warriors went on a 18-6 run midway through the second half to breakaway from the Broncos (1-1). UH improved to 2-0 and put itself in position to capture its 14
th Rainbow Classic crown when it faces New Mexico State on Monday in a nationally-televised game at midnight.
Christian Standhardinger and
Keith Shamburger each scored 17 points to pace Hawai'I with Shamburger scoring all but two of his points in the first half.
Isaac Fotu recorded his third double-double of his career with 14 points and 10 rebounds and keyed the win by scoring the first eight points of UH's game-changing run.
Quincy Smith also was huge in the clutch with 13 second-half points.
One night after cruising to a 30-point win over Tennessee State, the 'Bows found themselves in battle with Western Michigan. The first half went back-and-forth with four ties and six lead changes. Shamburger caught fire, scoring 13 of the team's final points of the half, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the 'Bows a 39-36 lead into the locker room.
The game continued to be nip-and-tuck in the second half with the Broncos clinging to a 51-50 lead with 11 minutes remaining. But that's when UH went on its decisive run, outscoring the Broncos, 18-6, over the next five minutes. Fotu and Smith combined for 16 of those points as UH took a 68-57 lead with six minutes remaining. The Broncos would get no closer than five points thereafter.
In the evening's first game, New Mexico State defeated Tennessee State 85-55. The Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic concludes Monday, Nov. 11. Tennessee State will meet up with Western Michigan at 2 p.m. before UH takes on New Mexico State at midnight.
