HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team got off to a sluggish start but then turned it on big time in a 91-58 rout of New Orleans Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 4-2 on the season with its second straight blowout win.
Less than a week after defeating UH Hilo by 51 points, the 'Bows ran loose against the Privateers, using monster runs in each half as well as some stifling defense to win comfortably.
Brandon Spearman led a balanced attack with a season-high 16 points.
Christian Standhardinger recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while
Keith Shamburger had 11 points and six assist.
UH did a stellar job defensively, holding the Privateers to just 28 percent shooting for the game, while holding UNO leading scorer Cory Dixon (19.0 ppg) to just seven points on 1-of-4 shooting.
Both teams came out flat as they combined to miss 30 of their first 42 shots. UH was uncharacteristically sloppy, committing eight turnovers in the first 10 minutes and trailed the Privateers, 17-15. But suddenly UH found its groove, scoring 15 unanswered points to take a double-digit lead. The 'Bows eventually took a 39-26 lead into the locker room.
UH kept the momentum after the break, going on a 22-5 run to start the second half. Meanwhile, UNO (1-3) made just one of its first 13 field goal attempts in the second half and fell behind by as many as 39 points.
UH started just 1-of-7 from three-point land but hit nine of its next 11 attempts and finished with a season-high 10 treys. The 'Bows finished with a season-high 22 turnovers but were absolutely dominant on the boards, out-rebounding UNO, 57-28.
The Rainbow Warriors conclude their three-game homestand when it hosts Montana on Friday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. It will be the second part of a double-header with the Rainbow Wahine who face Colorado State at 5:00 p.m.
