ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The No. 12 University of Hawai'i women's water polo started its 2013 campaign with a dominate performance, defeating Sonoma State, 16-3, Thursday afternoon at Dr. G Edward Rudloff Pool.
It was a team effort for Hawai'i as nine different Rainbow Wahine got in the scoring column, while seven players tallied multiple goals. UH scored 26 seconds into the match on a goal by freshman
Paula Chillida Esforzado and the Seawolves would equalize on the very next possession. After that, however, it was all Hawai'i as the Rainbow Wahine scored eight unanswered goals to take a commanding 9-1 lead midway through the third quarter. UH led 6-1 at half and continued the onslaught in the second half, outscoring the Seawolves, 10-2, after the break.
UH welcomed the return of All-American
Monika Eggens who after taking a one-year hiatus to train with the Canadian National team played her first match as a Rainbow Wahine since the 2011 season. The senior finished with a pair of goals in the win. Meanwhile, junior
Clair Babinski got the starting nod in goal and finished with 10 saves.
UH continues its season-opening road trip on Friday, Feb. 1 when it travels to Santa Clara to take on the Broncos at 3:30 p.m. PT at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. The teams last met two years ago when UH defeated Santa Clara, 12-3, at the Bronco Invite.
