WAIPAHU, O'ahu –
Tiana Fujimoto scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with six minutes left in regulation, to lift the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart in the 'OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament Friday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Playing their first home match of the season, the Rainbow Wahine (2-1) picked up the pace at the beginning of the match, as well as the pivotal last 15 minutes of regulation to win. Fujimoto, a sophomore forward, scored a goal in each half in keeping UH undefeated at home (5-0-1) in the their last six home matches dating back to last season.
UH controlled the action for the majority of the match, generating 10 corner kicks and out-shooting the Pioneers, 19-5. But that did not stop the Pioneers (0-2) from getting on the board first in the 16
th minute when UH failed to clear a ball in the box. Jennifer Mulvey intercepted the pass on the left side of the penalty area and place a shot far post to give Sacred Heart the lead.
Hawai'i, however, equalized just three minutes later when the Pioneers had a defensive miscue of their own. Crystal Fresquez send a long ball towards the Sacred Heart goal with Fujimoto streaking down the middle of the field. A Pioneer defender attempted to pass the ball back to goal, but an aggressive Fujimoto beat the goalkeeper to the punch a poked a shot into an open net.
The score was tied, 1-1, at half, and remained that way for the first 39 minutes of the second half. UH pressed the action and finally broke through when Fujimoto gathered a ball from Carroll in the box and bent a shot in the upper right corner from 12 yards out for the game winner.
It was the second multiple-goal match for Fujimoto, who also netted two goals last year in a win over Hawai'i Pacific.
UH's win sets up a championship showdown with Utah Valley. The Wolverines (1-1), who defeated Sacred Heart, 3-2, in the opening match of the tournament on Wednesday, will take on the Rainbow Wahine on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 5:00 p.m.
