SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team staged a late rally but lost to San Jose State 6-4 on Sunday at Municipal Stadium. The game was the series finale between the two teams as the Rainbows now travel to Louisiana for a Tuesday matchup at Grambling State.
Trevor Podratz homered in the eighth inning and
Kaeo Aliviado scored in the ninth to cut the lead to 6-4, but
Collin Bennett grounded into a game-ending double play to end the comeback bid. UH failed to complete the series sweep and fell to 23-16 overall and 4-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Aliviado and
Zack Swasey both batted 2-4 for Hawai'i with Aliviado scoring a run and Swasey adding one RBI.
Stephen Ventimilia also had two hits for the Rainbows.
Scott Squier (3-2) was tagged with the loss allowing four earned runs on six hits in four innings of work.
Michael Gerlach batted 3-4 with two runs and one RBI to lead the Spartans. Nick Shulz had one hit, two runs, and one RBI including a solo homer in the first inning. Zack Jones (3-2) worked six innings for the win, allowing one earned run on six hits with nine strikeouts.
The 'Bows fell behind early as they had in the previous two games of the series. After Shulz's homerun in the first inning, Gerlach scored an unearned one inning later to put SJSU up 2-0. Gerlach advanced to third on a passed ball then scored on a Kyle Gallegos (1 H, 1 RBI) base hit through the left side of the infield.
Hawai'i clawed back to tie the game in the fourth inning. Bennett (1 H, 1 R) singled then stole second before Swasey's base hit drove him home for UH's second run.
The Spartans regained the lead with a trio of runs in the fifth inning. Consecutive RBI hits by Matt Lopez (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Gerlach gave their team a 5-2 lead.
Hawai'i and Grambling State will play one game before UH closes its road trip with three WAC games against Louisiana Tech. First pitch against Grambling is set for 6:00 p.m. CT.
