No. 14/18 Hawai`i Travels to Nevada for WAC Series

Game Notes

RENO, Nev.—The No. 14/18 University of Hawai'i softball team (35-4, 9-2 WAC) hits the road a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Nevada (16-28, 6-6 WAC). The Rainbow Wahine regained a half-game lead in the WAC and look to keep their momentum going after sweeping Louisiana Tech last week with three decisive victories.
 
Reigning WAC Hitter of the Week, Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu led UH's aggressive offensive attack which featured six players that hit over the .300 mark for the series. UH swept with three mercy-rule victories (9-1, 9-1, 8-0) over the Lady Techsters this past weekend. Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu hit a team-high .875 (7-for-8) with a team-best eight RBI. She led Hawai'i's offensive onslaught that combined for a .426 batting average with eight home runs. UH outscored the Lady Techsters 26-to-2 in their final conference trip to Honolulu. It marked the 11th, 12th, and 13th time this season that the 'Bows have won by the mercy rule.
 
Current WAC Pitcher of the Week, junior southpaw Kaia Parnaby, combined with senior standout Stephanie Ricketts for the three wins over LA Tech. Parnaby posted a 0.00 ERA in one appearance last week. In the series finale against Louisiana Tech, she threw a one-hit shutout, striking out seven over five innings. Parnaby gave up just one hit to the leadoff batter of the game then did not give up another hit all game. It marked her seventh shutout of the year and improved her record to 13-2 on the season and 2-2 in conference. Ricketts went 2-0 on the week to raise her record to 22-2 overall and 7-0 in conference. She had a 1.27 ERA in 11.0 innings pitched with 15 strike outs while holding the Lady Techsters to a .195 average. Overall, Ricketts continues her standout season with a 0.95 ERA in 161.2 innings pitched. She has 182 strike outs to 68 walks with 24 complete games and eight shutouts.
 
Overall, junior shortstop Jessica Iwata continues to lead UH with a .396 batting average. She also has team-highs in hits (42); doubles (tied with Dara Pagaduan with seven); RBI (40); slugging percentage (.689) and on-base percentage (.500). Iwata also has team-highs with 12 multiple hit games and 13 multiple RBI games this season. Senior third baseman Sarah Robinson continues her steady output with a .339 average (40-for-118) while rookie designated player Leisha Li'ili'i is hitting a solid .324 (33-for-102).

About Nevada...
The Wolf Pack are 16-28 overall and 6-6 in conference. They are coming off a 2-1 series win at New Mexico State with a pair of dramatic come-back wins over the defending WAC regular season and tournament champion Aggies. Nevada came back from a four-run and a five-run deficit early in the first and second games of the series to win, 7-6 and 8-7 before falling in the series finale, 12-4 in six innings. They are currently sitting in fifth place behind San Jose State (6-4) and ahead of No. 6 Louisiana Tech (5-6).

Sophomore shortstop Karley Hopkins a lefty-hitter who leads the Wolf Pack with a .327 average (49-for-150) with team-highs in runs (25) and hits (49). Junior first baseman Lauren Lastrapes is also hitting well at .311 (46-for-148) with eight doubles and five home runs while sophomore catcher/outfielder Sara Parsons is right behind with a .291 average (34-for -117) with a team-high 14 doubles. Freshman catcher Ashley Butera leads Nevada with six home runs while junior outfielder Chelsea Barilli leads with eight stolen bases.

In the circle, Nevada's pitching staff has a combined 4.14 ERA. Sophomore transfer pitcher Karlyn Jones has been on a roll as of late. She is 7-4 overall but has won her last six games and is a perfect 4-0 in conference this year, notching wins over Fresno State, Utah State, San Jose State, and most recently New Mexico State already this season. Jones has a 1.52 ERA in the WAC and has just one walk with 13 strikeouts. Overall she is 7-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 82.1 innings. Senior Mallary Darby has seen the bulk of the workload throwing 127.1 innings with a 7-13 record overall and a 3.85 ERA. She has 24 walks to 79 strike outs with 11 complete games. Darby is 1-2 in WAC action. Bailey Brewer is 2-8 with a 5.56 ERA in 63 innings pitched.

Series history: Hawai'i leads the series between Nevada 19-to-15. However, the Wolf Pack have the edge in games played in Reno, 8-to-5. UH has a 13-4 record at home but Nevada has had the 'Bows number in the WAC tournament, winning five-out-of-six meetings in the championship tourney.
