HONOLULU – The No. 17 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team is still searching for its first league win after dropping an 8-5 decision to No. 9 San Jose State Saturday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 7-10 overall and 0-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with the loss.
Both teams entered the match looking for their first league win but it was the Spartans (13-8, 1-3 MPSF) who came out in front behind a hat trick by senior attacker Danni Curran. Anna Natalizio and Victoria Smith also added two goals each for San Jose State. Four different Rainbow Wahine scored in the match for UH led by a pair of goals by sophomore
Danielle Lewis.
Things looked bright for the Rainbow Wahine early on as Lewis scored on UH's first possession just 53 seconds into the match. But the Spartans scored the next two goals and the Rainbow Wahine found themselves playing catch-up the rest of the match.
UH trailed just 4-3 at half and it was a 5-4 game heading into the final stanza. But the Spartans scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter—including a Curran strike with less than five minutes remaining—to give the Spartans an insurmountable 7-4 cushion.
Both teams got stalwart play from their goalies who combined for 24 saves. UH's
Serena Reid posted 13 saves, while SJSU's Meagan Minson tallied 11.
The Rainbow Wahine next host their home finale on Saturday, March 31 when they face MPSF rival UCLA at 6:00 p.m. Departing seniors
Sivan Pardon and
Maile Osborne will be honored following the conclusion of the match.
