Game Notes
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team will play its first road games this week, taking on Gonzaga in a four-series (Mar. 22-25). The Rainbows were also scheduled to play Portland on Tuesday night, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions.
The Rainbows closed their early season home stand at 14-7, and are fresh off a series against San Francisco. UH won three of the four tight contests against the Dons, losing only on Friday to USF's potential MLB first round draft pick in Kyle Zimmer.
The Hawai'i pitching staff was again in top form. UH pitchers posted a combined a 0.75 ERA, allowing just three earned runs and holding the Dons to a stingy .184 batting average. UH is far and away the Western Athletic Conference leader with a 2.39 ERA.
Jarrett Arakawa was tagged with the loss in game two, his first of the season, but with all three of his runs unearned he now leads the WAC with a 1.34 ERA and has a team-best 30 strikeouts.
The 'Bows have been struggling with their run production as of late, but did just enough to get the job done last week.
Joe Goldenberg stepped up on Thursday when he delivered a two-RBI base hit in the seventh inning in UH's 2-1 win. On Friday, it was a pair of late hits by
Max Duval and
Collin Bennett that sealed the win, and savvy baserunning was the difference in Sunday's series finale.
Stephen Ventimilia batted .357 (5-14) to lead the team along with a team best three runs scored, and overall is hitting a team-best .324.
