SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 14 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team concluded the three-day long Aztec Invitational with a 11-9 victory over No. 19 UC San Diego. The invitational was hosted by San Diego State, with all matches played at the Aztec Aquaplex.
It was a close match between the two teams, but the Rainbow Wahine (7-9, 0-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) kept it together and controlled the lead until the end.
UH had a one-point advantage to end the first quarter 3-2, and UCSD stepped it up in the second, matching UH 3-3 goals to go into halftime behind by just one point, 6-5.
It was deja vu in the third, as the two teams matched each other 3-3 again, going into the final quarter, 9-8 in the Rainbow Wahine's favor. The Tritons fell short in the fourth, as UH outscored them 2-1 to take the match by the final buzzer.
Junior Amarens Genee recorded a new career-high six goals to lead the Rainbow Wahine in through their third win of the tournament.
Action resumes when UH returns to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex for a two-game homestand against San Jose State and UCLA on Mar. 24 and Mar. 31, respectively.
