SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 14 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team split a pair of matches on day two of the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State. Following a 7-6 upset by Wagner, UH came back with a 9-7 victory over Bucknell at the Aztec Aquaplex.
The Rainbow Wahine (
6-9, 0-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) had the advantage for most of the match over Wagner, until the Seahawks scored three goals in the final quarter to steal the lead and hold it until the final buzzer.
UH outscored Wagner 3-2 to the end the first quarter, and both teams matched 1-1 in the second, going into halftime 4-3 in UH's favor. It was 1-1 again in the third, but in the fourth, the Seahawks slid past with three goals to upset the Rainbow Wahine by one point.
Emily Scott led the Rainbow Wahine with two goals.
In the late afternoon however, the Rainbow Wahine bounced back and controlled the pace of the match until the end over Bucknell. They scored three unmatched goals to get a good start in the first, and the two teams matched goals 2-2, but UH still held a 5-2 lead going to halftime.
Although Bucknell outscored UH 5-4 in the second half, it still wasn't enough to catch up. Scott and
Amarens Genee each recorded hat tricks to lead the Rainbow Wahine in their second victory of the tournament.
Action Continues Sunday, Mar. 18 as UH takes on Indiana at 9:15 a.m. at the Aztec Aquaplex.
