Men’s Volleyball Swept By No. 4 Cougars

Box Score

HONOLULU – One night after extending No. 4 Brigham Young to five sets, the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team lost in straight sets Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-14, 29-27, 25-17.

The Warriors (7-14, 4-12 MPSF) concluded a brutal stretch in the schedule, which saw them play 10 consecutive matches against teams ranked No. 4 or higher. UH finished 1-9 during that span and have slipped to 10th in the league standings.

UH was led once again by senior outside hitter Steven Hunt, who tallied 13 kills. Outside hitter JP Marks added six kills but committed six errors. Freshman opposite Taylor Averill had five kills and four digs.

Taylor Sander had a match-high 18 kills for the Cougars and hit .464 with four service aces while Robb Stowell added nine kills, seven digs, and five blocks. As a team, the Cougars hit .411 and recorded 10 team blocks.

With the score tied at 8 in Set 1, the Cougars reeled off 10 straight points with Sander at the service line, including all four aces during that run.

The Warriors took an early 7-3 lead in Set 2 only to see it disappear and watch the Cougars take a 9-8 lead. But UH didn't let that faze them and the teams traded side-outs for the better part of the set. The Warriors hit 20 first and took a 22-20 lead after an ace by Hunt.

But BYU stormed back with three straight points before a Hunt kill tied it at 23. The teams traded side-outs and the Warriors erased four set points before Sander ended it with a kill.

In Set 3, the Cougars rallied from a 3-0 deficit and scored six unanswered for a 13-9 lead. BYU pushed its lead to 18-12 and never looked back.

The Warriors will next play a two-match MPSF series at Cal State Northridge, March 23-24.
