HONOLULU—The No. 18/19 University of Hawai`i softball team (23-2) fell to No. 21/22 Texas A&M, 3-1 on the fourth day of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.
The 'Bows got on the scoreboard first posting a single run in the bottom of the first inning.
Kayla Wartner started things by getting hit by a pitch. She moved to second on a single down the left field line by
Sarah Robinson. Pinch runner
Rachel Paragas then entered the game for Wartner at second.
Jessica Iwata then reached on a fielder's choice to short. On the play the Aggies' shortstop tossed to the second baseman who dropped the ball to load the bases. Then after a strike out,
Sharla Kliebenstein drew a walk to force Paragas home for the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth the Aggies erupted for three runs to leapfrog the 'Bows to a 3-1 lead. Amber Garza led the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Kelsea Orsak then hit a single to left. On the play, the leftfielder bobbled it a little and Garza, after stopping at third, took off for home, but a perfect one-hop throw from Aguirre to Wartner cut her down at the plate. After a flyout to leftfield Emily Albus hit a little cue shot to third for a single that advanced Orsak to third. Meagan May then hit a high fly to shallow left that fell in for a single that drove in both Albus and Orsak. Kaydee Rayburn then pinch ran for Texas A&M at second and Mel Dumazich followed with a double off the leftfield fence to score Rayburn for their third run.
UH's
Stephanie Ricketts (13-2) suffered the loss, throwing 7.0 innings. She gave up three runs on nine hits with four walks and four strike outs.
Aggies' pitcher, Dumazich also fired a complete game in the win, giving up one run on three hits with two walks. She had a career-high 14 strike outs.
Hawai`i concludes their final tournament on Saturday, March 17 with a game against Winthrop at 4:00 p.m.
