Water Polo Falls To No. 2 Stanford In Home-Opener

Box Score

HONOLULU – The No. 14 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team dropped its third conference match, 12-4 to No. 2 Stanford Saturday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The match was UH's home-opener and was played in front of a crowd of 525.

Although the Rainbow Wahine (5-8, 0-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) remained close behind the Cardinal (14-1, 2-0 MPSF), 4-3 at halftime, they lost control in the second half while Stanford went on a 9-0 run to the end.

It was a quiet start for both teams, as they ended the first quarter 1-1. Junior Amarens Genee backhanded in the first goal of the night for UH, but was later matched by Stanford's Kaley Dodson.

Action sped up in the second, as the Cardinal took the lead early off a power play. However, after a penalty called on Stanford, Wilson sunk the shot in to tie it again. Stanford stole the lead back in the middle of the quarter, but Caity Lopes da Silva ties it once again off the power play. However, it was Cardinal who had the last word to end the half 4-3 in their favor.

The Cardinal powered through the third quarter with four unanswered goals and again through the fourth with another four unanswered. Although the Emily Carr was able to sneak one in for the Rainbow Wahine in the last two minutes of play, Stanford handed UH its third MPSF loss.

It was a team effort for UH as Wilson, Carr, Genee and Lopes da Silva combined for four with one goal each. On Stanford's side, Kiley Neushul, Pallavi Menon and Cassie Churnside each contributed two.

Action resumes on Mar. 15 as the Rainbow Wahine get another chance to grab their first conference victory at No. 5 San Diego State at 3:00 p.m. PT.
