STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 10 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team went 1-1, losing to No. 4 UCLA and defeating No. 12 Michigan on the first day of the Stanford Invitational at the Avery Aquatic Center. They now improve to 1-2, 0-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the tournament with a heart-breaking 6-5 loss to the Bruins. UH started off with a strong 3-1 lead in the first quarter but remained scoreless in the second while UCLA played catch up and tied the score 3-3 at halftime.
UH was able to add two points to the board in the third, and led by one point going into the final quarter. However, the Bruins slipped past for the victory with two goals, while the Rainbow Wahine remained silent.
Caity Lopes da Silva and
Emily Scott put in two goals each for the Rainbow Wahine, while
Amarens Genee added one. On the Bruins' side KK Clark and Kelly Ronimus had two goals each to lead.
UH took their first victory of the season over Michigan in the late afternoon of the tournament. Although they were tied at 2 with the Wolverines at halftime, the Rainbow Wahine footed a comfortable 5-3 lead after scoring three goals in the third.
Both teams matched each other with two goals in the final quarter but UH held on for the win in the end.
Danielle Lewis performed a hat trick to lead the Rainbow Wahine to victory.
The Rainbow Wahine continue the Stanford Invitational tomorrow with another match against No. 2 California at 8:15 a.m. PT. Their final match will be determined by those results.
