Men’s Volleyball Extends Win Streak To 31 Over Pacific

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team continued its dominance over Pacific with a straight-set Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory Saturday at the Alex. G. Spanos Center. The Warriors extended their win streak over the Tigers to 31 with the 25-21 25-22, 25-19 victory.

The Warriors (6-5, 3-3 MPSF), who won for the 16th straight time over UOP in Stockton, now hold a 40-1 advantage in the series. UH also extended its season win streak to four.

After taking 57 swings with 25 kills in UH's come-from-behind five-set victory one night earlier, outside hitter Steven Hunt had a match-high 14 kills with four digs and three blocks. Freshman Taylor Averill had 10 kills and four blocks and hit .375.

UH's block was huge once again with 10.5 team blocks led by middle Jarrod Lofy's five. Fellow middle Nick West and setter Sam Biscaro each had four.

The Tigers (3-7, 1-4) were led by Adam Troy's 10 kills.

UH jumped out to a huge lead in Set 1, leading by eight as late as 20-12 before the Tigers closed to within 23-20. But Averill and Hunt closed out the set with back-to-back kills. The Warriors hit .429 in the set.

Hawai'i's block came to life in Set 2 as Lofy and Averill teamed for a pair of blocks and Hunt stuffed Troy one-on-one during a five-point spurt for a 16-11 lead. The Tigers closed to within two on six different occasions but UH sided-out for the victory with a pair of kills by Hunt and one by Averill.

The Tigers shot themselves in the foot to start Set 3 with three hitting errors in falling behind 7-1. UH extended its lead to 12-5 and held a comfortable lead until the Tigers scored four straight to pull within 19-17. Moments later, Marks put down his seventh kill and followed with his second ace of the match putting UH ahead 23-19. UOP hit long on consecutive points to end the match.

The Warriors will next host UC Irvine for a two-match MPSF series, Friday, Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb. 12.
