STOCKTON, Calif. – Down two sets to none to 12
th-ranked Pacific, the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team rallied for thrilling five-set victory, Friday, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Alex G. Spanos Center. Set scores were 24-26, 22-25, 25-19, 27-25, 15-11.
The No. 14 Warriors (5-5, 2-3 MPSF) erased two match points in the match-turning fourth set and never trailed in the deciding fifth game. UH extended its win streak over the Tigers in Stockton to 15 and improved to 39-1 all-time against Pacific.
Outside hitter
Steven Hunt had a match-high 25 kills to lead the Warriors. The senior took 57 swings and had three key service aces, including one late in the fourth set during a five-point UH run that erased a 20-15 deficit.
Three other Warriors hit in double figures including middle blocker
Nick West, who had 12 kills in 17 swings and hit .529. The sophomore also had eight blocks, one shy of the team lead of nine set by setter Sam Biscarro who also posted a career-high 57 assists in leading the Warriors to a .310 hitting percentage.
As a team, Hawai'i also out-blocked the Tigers, 17-to-11.5. Pacific (3-6, 1-3) was led by Taylor Hughes' 22 kills.
Down two sets, the Warriors jumped all over UOP in the third set to a 14-6 lead en route to a 25-19 victory. Leading 10-9 in the fourth set, the Warriors committed three hitting errors during a five-point Tigers run and found themselves down 14-10. UOP continued to lead 20-15 before UH tied it at 20 and eventually took a 22-21 lead following a
JP Marks kill.
The Tigers scored three straight on back-to-back kills by Sean Daley and Taylor Hughes and a block by Daley on UH's West giving them two match points. Hunt erased the first one and West and Marks teamed to stuff Adam Troy to tie the score at 24. Marks followed with a kill giving UH set point before Hughes tied it at 25. The Warriors then closed out the set with consecutive kills by Marks and Hunt.
Hawai'i jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Set 5 with a pair of double blocks by West and Biscaro and a kill by West. UH surged ahead 6-2 when Biscaro and
Jarrod Lofy teamed up for another block. The Tigers pulled to within one at 7-6 but would get no closer as the Warriors closed out the match when Lofy stuffed Daley one-on-one.
The teams play again Saturday at 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT).
