MISSOULA, Mont. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team fell victim to a red-hot Montana team in a 94-79 loss Saturday night at the Dahlberg Arena. The contest—part of the ESPN BracketBusters event—is the first of three straight road games for the Rainbow Warriors.
Montana (20-6) shot a sizzling 58 percent from the game, including 11-of-23 from three-point range to race past the Rainbow Warriors (15-11). The Grizzlies also got a monster performance from Kareem Jamar who notched a triple double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assist. The win was Montana's ninth straight and 15
th in its last 16 contests.
Aside from a brief UH lead in the early moments, Montana led for the entire game. The Grizzlies took a 13-point lead at the half and coasted in the second half, building its lead to as many as 20 points in the second half. UH had a solid shooting performance at 49 percent but couldn't keep up with the Grizzlies who put up the most points by a UH opponent this year.
Vander Joaquim led UH, posting his 10
th double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebound.
Shaquille Stokes came off the bench to finish in double digits for the second straight game with 13 points.
Hauns Brereton added 12 points, while
Joston Thomas chipped in 11.
Montana got off to a fast start and built its lead to as many as 14 points on a pair of occasions in the first half before taking a 47-34 lead at the break. The 47 points were the most first-half points UH has surrendered all-year. The Grizzlies built is lead on a flurry of three-pointers as they hit 8-of-15 in the first half alone. UH cut the lead to nine points early in the second half but wouldn't get any closer.
UH continues it three-game road trip when it returns to WAC action against New Mexico State on Thursday, Feb. 23. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Pan American Center.
